Opportunities in Dermatological Compounding

*Please note that we no longer carry bases at Total Pharmacy Supply, but we still offer a vast selection of supplies to support your pharmacy in all their compounding needs.
Dermatological Compounds are often not considered “medically necessary” and therefore result in non-coverage by third parties. At the minimum, lengthy prior authorizations processes and expensive, non-formulary copays will influence the patient to not fill the prescription. This can ultimately lead to commercial drugs being discontinued. For this very reason, Dermatology is a viable market for compounders, and a needed resource for patients.
When a dermatologist learns that these active ingredients are still available and customizable, this can be a great entry point for a compounder to create a specialty market. With the advancement of vehicle bases and equipment technology, compounders can produce a cosmetically elegant version of the discontinued trade name drug. By altering the concentrations or incorporating additional active ingredients, compounders can offer a sleek advantage to dermatologist.
Keep your ears open for opportunities like these. Listen to what your patients need and be the resource that always comes through for them.
